For Your Children for Ickenham Residents

The close-knit Ickenham community means word travels fast when a service is good. Many Ickenham families come to us on recommendation from other parents or from school staff who've seen the results of our SchoolVision and colorimetry assessments. The one-stop tube ride makes it easy to attend after school.

In a village where families know each other and recommendations carry real weight, Eyewise has become the trusted choice for children's eye care among Ickenham parents. That trust is built on thoroughness, we check visual skills that standard sight tests don't even measure.

Paediatric Examinations: Our assessments go well beyond the letter chart. We evaluate how well your child's eyes work together, how efficiently they focus at different distances, and how smoothly they track moving objects, all critical skills for learning and play. We're gentle and patient, even with the most reluctant young patients.

SchoolVision: Designed for children who are underperforming despite seemingly good eyesight, SchoolVision tests every visual skill the classroom demands. Ickenham children from Breakspear Junior and Glebe Primary have benefited enormously when we've identified tracking or focusing issues that explain their struggles with reading and writing.

Myopia Management: Children in Ickenham are increasingly short-sighted, often linked to screen time and less outdoor play. Our management programmes, EyeDream overnight lenses and specialist spectacle lenses, slow progression and protect your child's eyes for the future. Starting before the teenage growth spurt is most effective.

Colorimetry: Visual stress isn't rare, it affects a significant number of children. Our Intuitive Colorimeter identifies the precise tint that calms visual discomfort. For Ickenham children who dread reading, this assessment can be transformative.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should my child first have an eye examination?

We recommend a first eye examination at around age 3-4, before starting school. However, if you notice any concerns earlier, such as a squint, sitting very close to the TV, or difficulty with hand-eye coordination, bring your child in sooner. Children don't need to know their letters; we have age-appropriate tests for the very youngest patients.

How do I know if my child has visual stress?

Signs of visual stress include words appearing to move, blur, or shimmer on the page, losing their place when reading, using a finger to track lines, headaches during or after reading, and avoiding reading altogether. If your child shows any of these signs, a colorimetry assessment with our Intuitive Colorimeter can determine whether precision-tinted lenses would help.

How do I know if my Ickenham child needs SchoolVision or just a regular eye test?

If your child has clear distance vision but struggles with reading, loses their place, has poor concentration, messy handwriting, or avoids close work, SchoolVision is the right assessment. A regular eye test mainly checks how clearly they see the chart, SchoolVision examines the full range of visual skills needed for learning.
