Childhood myopia (short-sightedness) is one of the biggest concerns in modern eye care. The prevalence of myopia in children has doubled over the past generation, driven by reduced outdoor time and increased near work and screen use.
Why Myopia Management Matters
It’s not just about needing stronger glasses each year. High myopia significantly increases the lifetime risk of retinal detachment, myopic macular degeneration, glaucoma, and early cataracts. Slowing progression now protects your child’s eyes for life.
Our Approach
At Eyewise Opticians, our Myopia Management Programme includes:
- Regular monitoring of eye prescription
- Fitting and supply of specialist EyeDream lenses for myopia management
- An alternative soft contact lens option for suitable prescriptions
- For those not ready for contact lenses, a suitable option of myopia control spectacle lenses
- Full ongoing support and aftercare, with recommendations on lifestyle and outdoor time and near-work management
When to Start
Myopia control is most effective when started early, typically between ages 6-12 when myopia tends to progress fastest. If your child’s prescription is increasing by more than -0.50 dioptres per year, we recommend a myopia management consultation.
Regular Monitoring
We monitor your child’s myopia at regular intervals, typically every 6 months, to track progression and adjust treatment as needed. This proactive approach ensures we’re always one step ahead.
